Before the Complex
One of the more interesting of these is how the apartment complex has changed the way people live. Before the birth of the apartment complex, the average family had one to two bedrooms per household, depending on how large the apartment was. As the apartments became smaller, more families started sharing two or three bedrooms, creating the myth we all know about “three rooms and a bath.”

They began sharing bathrooms and hallways. Before long, these changes created a need for more people to fill out these smaller apartments. This influx of people into the area created a demand for jobs in the area, which brought the need for more roads and infrastructure and a need for more education.

The developers needed to keep up with this influx, and so they added another room to each apartment complex. This was known as the fourth floor. Soon after, architects started thinking of more creative ways to use the extra space. The result is that we now have buildings with rooms to spare, the main hallway, and a living room. All of these are vital to the comfort of a resident.
Open Layout
Another common fact about apartment buildings is that they tend to be very open and airy. As a result, residents are able to enjoy any type of outdoor space that they may want. This includes large backyards, courtyards, and outdoor patios. While smaller apartments may not have these amenities, many newer developments do include them. As an example, the upcoming building projects at New York University will include a rooftop garden, which is expected to be open to residents permanently.

One more important fact to keep in mind is that apartment owners must have permits in order to make any type of renovations. This is often a simple requirement, but it is important for you to understand this fact before starting a project. Some of the renovations that may require permits include anything that alters the structure of the building, as well as anything that adds to the utility costs of the property. For instance, if you are putting a swimming pool in an apartment complex, you will likely have to get a permit for the construction. In addition, if you add an addition to an existing building, you will have to get permission for the addition, again, altering the structure of the apartment complex.
